Side Show Number 1
Seven 10 minute sections dedicated to the audience...
Booking Now : Theatre in the Mill @ Bradford, 16 - 18 November 2006, ( 7:30 for 7:45 pm start )
MUSIC / DANCING / DISCUSSION / CONTEMPLATION & probably a little chaos
Broadly titled, the themes and variations of choice for this first SIDESHOW are :
-
INTRO / BOXING RING
-
PRECARIOUS BALANCE
-
CHANCE
-
CONTEMPLATION
-
EXTRAVAGANZA
-
MENTAL BLACK HOLE
-
CRAZY DANCING
The explanations and explorations of each of these sections will be detailed in the Introduction.
A Precarious Balance of musical and physical forces will then proceed. Chance will pose a question and see where it leads. The Extravaganza will follow a 20 minute interval and will involve a degree or two of transformation. There will more than likely be some film / projection in the Mental Black Hole... and hopefully the Crazy Dancing will speak for itself.
Don't be afraid. We won't attempt to hurt or humiliate anyone. There is enough of that going on in the world already. We intend to form seven 10 minute sections around themes and variations drawn from the ICD's researches into PERSUASION over the past two years.
The project began at Theatre in the Mill in October 2004 and returns via several further PERSUASIONS and TREASURE HUNTS.
The ICD is an international and irreverent collective of thinkers, do-ers, dancers, musicians, artists, builders and clowns. It specialises in creating extraordinary and compelling site-specific events through which the audience become integral to the work.
The Institute is constantly seeking ways and means to produce work that engages and excites people. They are always on a treasure hunt; the work is always collaborative and exploratory. It is a devising process. SIDESHOW #1 will feature Stevie Goodwin and Jason Hird attempting to present themselves and the ICD in the here and now, from close, far, up, down, and all around; keeping their wits about them and always crossing with the Green Man...
The theatrical characters Lord Tony Rigoletto and Sir Peter Skylord may well make an appearance...
Breathe in - and - breathe out... Please wear comfortable shoes...
( May contain traces of other nuts )

Persuasion
Persuasion ( Phase 3 ) - The Institute For Crazy Dancing
The cliché or most obvious manifestation of possibility for Phase 3 would be a bar or club at which audiences and performers would attend from across Europe (and beyond): to experience the on-going and developing work-in-progress. This is not to be dismissed.
However, The Institute could be a ' travelling circus ', a series of permanent installations in different locations, or an opera ( of sorts )...
The work is a devising process
The parameters shift. The challenge lies in drafting tangible structures for long-term development – charting courses, sailing close to the wind and also working with prevailing conditions...

The Conceptual Ball
Persuasion ( Phase 2 ) - The Conceptual Ball
This will be a hub of conceptual material accompanied by a team of collaborators, practical expressions / applications and intentions. The Ball will be applicable to multiple situations, forms and sites of production. It will – more than likely - manifest itself into an event / performance / ball, at some stage...
Phase 2 will also see a lengthy period of nomadic explorations, nationally and internationally.
Taking "The Ball" to festivals, galleries, spaces and places in order to develop and refine marketing, material and concept. Alongside live and time-based works, further collaborations and explorations in image, text, music, and on the web will take place.

Little Conversations
Persuasion (Phase 1) - The Little Conversations
The Little Conversations aim to craft a team of contributing artists and performers, fabricate an aesthetic and rough draft of ideas and physical material, and put in place systems and structures for marketing and audience development. Little conversations with audiences, producers, performers, journalists, etcetera are expected to fuel and continue throughout the project.
This phase of the project is in its 10th month. Six of the nine scheduled parts have been undertaken or are in development.
PERSUASION ( Parts 1 & 2 ) – Bradford, London and Leeds, Launch Night – Halifax, and Treasure Hunt – Bracknell, have all employed basic building materials, masquerade, gentle but full audience participation, choreography, baking, precarious balances, consideration of extremes and absurdities and have all opened up dynamic lines of communication. Continuing analysis and evaluation of the work will take place before the final part of Phase 1 is undertaken.
This will be the first draft of the Conceptual Ball...

Over-View
We´re in stage 1 of a 3 stage process. There´s more to come...
The newly constituted project : The Institute For Crazy Dancing intends to focus upon the continued development and expansion of the structured improvisation around the broad theme : Persuasion.
The work of the ICD creates links between academic, practical and theoretical experiences and research into devising live performance. The work is a devising process, it is a long-term speculation in the art of Persuasion – as a motivation to action and engagement in the fabrication of a theatre which is genuinely inspiring and illuminating.
The project is divided into three phases which provide trajectories and structures for the process to evolve through.
The 3 phases of the work are titled :
- Little Conversations
- The Conceptual Ball
- The Institute For Crazy Dancing
It is a 5 to 7 year work-in-progress...
